With Maldita

It’s impossible to talk about the digital world in 2026 without mentioning artificial intelligence. What seemed like science fiction just a few years ago is now part of everyday life for anyone with internet access. These new tools and language models, such as Claude, ChatGPT, GeminAI, Grok, and Midjourney, have as many supporters as detractors.

On the one hand, their ability to generate text and images makes life easier for many people; on the other, their environmental impact is unacceptable, and their effect on the human psyche is still being studied. In this first activity of the PRO Zone, we will analyze their impact with the help of Maldita.es, a non-profit foundation and media outlet specializing in fact-checking and debunking misinformation.

Pablo P茅rez Benavente is a philologist and artificial intelligence specialist at Maldita.es, a non-profit foundation based in Spain that protects the integrity of information and promotes the building of public trust through journalism, education, technology, research, and advocacy in public policy. He is an expert in qualitative social media analysis, the use of knowledge graphs applied to disinformation, and the development of tools that support the work of journalists and researchers. He has participated in roundtables on ethics and artificial intelligence and has led training sessions and workshops on the use of artificial intelligence for information professionals and non-profit media outlets. He has also been a fellow of the “La Caixa” Foundation and a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
